Riots and public disorder in London boroughs - FORMO Press Release

posted 11 Aug 2011 08:27 by Khalid Sharif

9th August 2011

Riots and public disorder in London boroughs

The Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations (FORMO) expresses its deepest concern
and condemnation of the violence, destruction of properties, looting and disgraceful attacks
on businesses in London boroughs and now being extended to other major UK cities.

The recent escalating skirmishes and lootings in Redbridge are particularly disturbing in light
of the tolerance, trust and mutual respect that have been built with the authorities in recent
years.

FORMO calls upon its members and the local community to remain calm, united and
vigilant, and further requests community leaders to support the emergency services in their
admirable efforts to maintain law and order in very challenging circumstances. We also
request our communities and young people to provide whatever help they can in clearing
and cleaning up.

FORMO urges parents to be extra vigilant over their children with safety being paramount.

Wider questions will be raised about what exactly has triggered off such violence; the call
now is to urge all communities to stand together in solidarity to address the immediate
concerns.

FORMO further urges anyone with information to contact the police anonymously through
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

RCF political event promotes civic participation

posted 10 Apr 2010 15:05 by Khalid Sharif

On Sunday 4th April 2010, Redbridge Community Forum held a conference on the upcoming elections hosted at the Redbridge Islamic Centre, Eastern Avenue, Redbridge.

A range of high profile national Muslim organisations and speakers were present including the Islamic Forum of Europe, The Cordoba Foundation, Muslim Research & Development Foundation, Cage Prisoners, Islamic Human Rights Commission and MPACUK.

The event highlighted the importance of civic and community participation for Muslims in Redbridge and further a field. Much of the discussions focused on the 'Muslim Vote' making a strategic difference to both local and national elections in May. There were also recitals from Redbridge Girls Forum.

The Chairman of Redbridge Islamic Centre, Abul Khayar Ali, highlighted the importance of local participation and explained to the audience of more than 200 local residents that their votes will make a difference in who could be elected to the local council and the services they would provide to the community.

Harun Rashid Khan, Chair of Redbridge Community Forum, encouraged people to get involved in community affairs to improve their localities and importantly, ensure that they are registered to vote, to participate in the forthcoming elections.
